Home Maintenance Checklist: September Edition
From lawn care to furnace maintenance: key tasks to conquer before Fall
🎯 TLDR - Do One Thing This Month:
👉 Schedule your furnace service. Once the first cold snap hits, every HVAC tech will be booked solid. A tune-up now keeps your system efficient and ready.
Bonus Reminder: As temperatures drop, adjust your settings for cooler weather. Optimize comfort and energy savings by updating schedules and checking thermostat settings.
September Checklist:
✅ Fertilize & Overseed Lawn. Fall is the best time to repair bare patches and strengthen roots. Apply slow-release fertilizer, overseed as needed, and lower the mower blade for the last cut of the season.
✅ Inspect Exterior Caulking. Seal gaps around windows, doors, siding, and utility lines. Small cracks let in drafts and pests. Use exterior-grade caulk or foam sealant where needed.
✅ Check Weatherstripping. Cool nights creep in fast. Replace cracked or missing strips around doors and windows to keep drafts out and heating bills down.
✅ Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Heating season = higher risk of carbon monoxide leaks. Test alarms and replace batteries if needed.
✅ Put Away Patio Furniture & Cushions. Moisture and freezing temps cause mildew, rust, and cracking. Wash, dry, and store cushions indoors. Wipe down furniture with mild soap and water, then cover or move to storage.
✅ Store Outdoor Appliances & Tools
Mowers, trimmers, and pressure washers last longer when winterized
• Drain water from hoses, pumps, and tanks
• Add fuel stabilizer to gas engines
• Sharpen mower blades and replace trimmer lines
• Clean/replace air filters and wipe down engine parts
• Check cords and fuel lines for wear
• Store everything in a dry place.
✅ Clean Gutters & Downspouts. Clear out leaves and debris so water drains properly. Make sure downspouts extend at least 3 to 4 feet and slope away from your foundation to prevent basement leaks.
